About us
The story of UWR Luxembourg — from 15 founding members in 2015 to two leagues in Germany, our own international tournament, and a brand-new youth section.
The history of the club
UWR Luxembourg founding member Tom Ketter discovered underwater rugby (UWR) while studying in Heidelberg. Tom really enjoyed the sport, and so when he graduated in 2012, he started looking for a way to bring the sport to Luxembourg.
Tom then met Felix Benedict through a UWR internet forum (it was a different, pre-Tinder time 😉). Felix, a former German national player and coach, had just been transferred to Luxembourg by his employer, and of course jumped on the opportunity to help develop UWR in his new home.
Thanks to their hard work over the following years, Underwater Rugby Luxembourg A.S.B.L. (UWR Luxembourg) was officially founded with 15 founding members in January 2015.
To get support setting up training, UWR Luxembourg contacted Swimming Luxembourg (SL), who were keen to help, as their mission has always been to cover all water-related sports. Three weeks after SL's commitment, UWR Luxembourg started training in Piscine Bonnevoie, and two months later the club took part in its first tournament, in Stuttgart.
Growing internationally
In 2016, UWR Luxembourg became a member of FLASSA (Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Activités Subaquatiques) — one of the first steps on the road to representing Luxembourg at the World Championships.
In 2019, UWR Luxembourg made its international debut at the CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships in Graz, Austria — the first time a Luxembourg team had ever competed at this level. Facing some of the strongest nations in the sport (including Austria, the USA, Sweden, Hungary and Slovakia), the team finished 17th — a proud result for such a young club.
In November 2022, UWR Luxembourg took part for the first time in the Champions Cup in Berlin — the annual international club competition that brings together the national champions of each country. Competing in the male/mixed category against some of Europe's strongest club teams, Luxembourg finished 12th out of 14 teams and recorded a memorable win against FIRS from Florence, Italy.
Hosting the Melusina Cup
Since 2018, UWR Luxembourg has organised its own international friendly tournament, the Melusina Cup, bringing together players from Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and beyond. The tournament returned to Piscine Cents in Luxembourg City in 2023 for its 6th edition, with more than 70 players from four countries. The 7th edition in October 2024 grew to 8 teams and over 100 players, with UWR Luxembourg fielding two full teams, and the 8th edition followed in September 2025 — now a fixture in the European UWR calendar.
A growing club
For the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons, UWR Luxembourg competes in two leagues in Baden-Württemberg, Germany (Landesliga and Bezirksliga), alongside regular friendly tournaments in Germany, Switzerland and beyond.
In September 2025, the club launched its first youth section, UWY (rugby subaquatique — équipe jeunes), welcoming young swimmers born between 2005 and 2012 to weekly training in Piscine Bonnevoie — the next generation of UWR Luxembourg players is already making waves.
